This tutorial describes how to create Social Media Images with Puzzles using Puzzle Maker Pro.

For some modules, e.g. Crossword Variations, it's now possible to create image output with a title and a watermark, in addition to the regular output for puzzle books. Please be aware, this is not yet available for all puzzle modules.

Introduction

The additional 'Image' output was introduced to make it possible to create puzzles with an improved layout for social media or printables. To make this possible, we created an 'Image Settings' layout option that has all the settings for these images. Here's an example of what's possible (the puzzle in this image is a Criss Cross puzzle):

Setting the Title and Description

The title and description for this puzzle are part of the word list that's used for this puzzle, using the "#title" and "#description" options:

Editing the Image Settings

When a puzzle in Puzzle Maker Pro supports these new Image Settings, there is an option on the Output Settings tab to edit the settings:

Layout Settings

The first tab has the Layout Settings. This is where you can enable or disable the different settings and add padding.

Padding and sizing is specified as a percentage of the total size of the puzzle. The exact size in pixels is calculated, based on the Puzzle Size.

Top Padding - optional empty space at the top of the image
Title Height - The font for the title will be adjusted automatically to make the text fit in the allocated space

Description Height
Description Bottom Padding - The description can be placed at the top or at the bottom of the puzzle
Puzzle Padding - empty space on all four sides of the puzzle, when it is added to the image. The actual empty space will also depend on the size and format of the puzzle. For example, when fitting a square puzzle in a rectangular space, there will be more white space on some of the sides
Watermark Top Padding
Watermark Height - The actual watermark is set on another tab, by default it's set to "www.bookpublishertools.com"
Bottom padding

You can enable or disable the different areas, depending on your styling preferences.

Colors and Fonts

You can set background color for the entire image (the canvas color) and the background color for the puzzle. (If the puzzle module has it's own canvas color settings, these will be used as well). Additionally you can add an outer border to the image.

You can set the fonts for the Title, Description and Watermark. (The Watermark font can be found on the Watermark tab). The font name, color and case will be used when printing the Title, Description or Watermark in the image.

Size Options

By default the image settings from the "Output Settings" tab in Puzzle Maker Pro are used. You can override this by selecting one of the size settings on the "Size Options" tab. This allows you to configure specific size settings for your social media platform.

Watermark

The Watermark option allows you to add an url or brand name at the bottom of each image automatically. It's best to switch off the Watermark (on the Layout tab) when you are creating puzzle books, but it's a handy feature when you are creating images for social media.

Introduction

There are many different types of Acrostic Crossword puzzles. Acrostic Column is the name we give to the type of Acrostic Crossword where a list of words is shown, and a single 'secret' word can be found in one of the columns.

To find the Acrostic Column puzzles, select "Crossword Variations" in the Puzzle Type dropdown menu in Puzzle Maker Pro. Then select "Acrostic Column" in the "Type" dropdown list.

You can click the different tabs to configure all the puzzle settings:

Word List: Type or select the word list. The word list will be automatically verified - a check if there's a secret word available
Settings: Additional settings for the Word List
Grid: Layout and size settings for the puzzle grid
Style: Font and color settings
Clues: Configure clue style and layout
Dict: Configure Dictionary settings

Acrostic Column Word Lists

Compared to Criss Cross puzzles, Acrostic puzzles have an additional complexity: The secret (or hidden) word. This is part of the word list. Here's a part of or demo word list:

If you type or copy the word list, it's best to click "Verify" after editing the words. This will check if there's a secret word present, and if there are enough words to cover all the letters in the secret word. (For example, if the secret word is "LOVE" and none of the words in the word list has a "V", it's not possible to generate a puzzle.)

Output Options

Crossword Variations and Acrostic Column are the first puzzles to support the new puzzle output options in Puzzle Maker Pro:

Fixed Size: This is the classic Puzzle Maker Pro output for puzzles, using a fixed size in pixels or inches
Dynamic Size (IPB): This option will calculate the puzzle size based on the current layout settings for Instant Puzzle Books. This way the puzzles will always have the exact size for your puzzle book. However, puzzles may not have the optimal size if you want to reuse them for further puzzle books
Use Image Settings: This is a new option, allowing you to override the puzzle size, and create images for e.g. social media. The images may include titles and watermarks. See also the separate Image Settings Tutorial.

Please be aware that if you switch from Fixed Size to Dynamic Size, you will need to adjust some of the style settings - A line with 5 pixels width will appear differently on a 2000 pixel image compared to a 400 pixel image. (Font sizing will be adjusted automatically)

Dictionary Options

Crossword Variations and Acrostic Column are the first puzzles to support our online English Dictionary. You can activate this on the "Dict" tab for Crossword Variations.

Edit after Create - Check this button to automatically the word list editor after a puzzle has been generated. Especially when the hints are printed in the puzzle image (as in the screenshot), it's not possible to edit the words afterwards

Word List Conventions

Word:Hint - On each line, type a word and add the hint (aka clue aka description) separated by a colon ":". You can type multiple hints for each word, the generator will select a random hint for each puzzle
#title:title - you can add a title for the puzzle. This can appear in the puzzle book (depending on your settings) or in the puzzle image

#secret:word:hint - use the tag "#secret" to specify the secret word for your puzzle

Wordlist Control - You can choose to use the words in the word list only once (Auto) or to create many more puzzles from a single word list. Words are drawn from the word list at random, so each puzzle will be different
Remove Characters - You can automatically clean up the word list by removing spaces and other characters

(The Word Count options are not used for Acrostic puzzles - the number of words is fixed for each secret word)

The settings on this tab will help you to create a consistent look for your puzzle book, or create optimal puzzle sizing for your puzzle images.

For puzzle books, you may want a clean look where all puzzles have the same size (the squares have the same size). In that case it's best to switch off 'Dynamic' and set a number of rows and colunms (2) that fits your word list. (Because words may be shifted to the left or right, it's best to generate a set of puzzles first, and check the resulting layouts)
For (social media) images, you may want the optimal dynamic size (1) for each puzzle, since these images will be posted and viewed separately.
Additionally, the puzzle can be aligned (in the image) as you wish, to create a consistent look

Style tab

On the Style tab you can select the fonts and colors for your puzzle.

You can choose to use the classic clue output, which will be printed only in the Instant Puzzle Books (PDF or Powerpoint) or the new 'In Image' output, which is shown in the screenshot.
When you print the clues (aka hints) in the image, you can set the position and number of columns. Additionally you can set how much space the puzzle should take. The best value for this space allocation depends on the words you are using, it's best to play with this value, and the number of Clue Columns, and generate previews to see what looks best.
Two additional Clue Style options are available: "Word Fill" - A list of words is added, instead of the hints. The goal is to find the right positions for the words. "Word Scramble" - Instead of the clues, a random scramble of the words will be shown
For Acrostic puzzles, the Clue Headings are only used for "Word Fill", in which case the "Word Fill Title" can be set

Dict tab

The built-in dictionary is AI generated and curated, with over 400,000 words and descriptions. Access to this dictionary is included in Crossword Variations. It is best to manually verify the chosen hint for each word after each puzzle is generated (using the "Edit After Create" option on the Word List tab
The "Main" dictionary is an option to use your own word list file, containing words and descriptions (hints) for each word.
The "Custom" dictionary is an additional option - whenever word descriptions are edited or added when creating puzzles, you can save them automatically to this Custom dictionary, for later use / reuse.

There are 5 different (small) steps:

Select the CSV File, the data file for your Low Content Book or Images,
Select the Powerpoint Template file
Verify Placeholders - Check that all placeholders in the Powerpoint file do have data in the CSV file
Set the Powerpoint Output file
Generate Slides.

Optionally you can create example files, this will save a sample CSV file and a sample Powerpoint file to your computer. (You can select the sample files for step 1 and 2, to do a first test-run with LCB Book Creator).

CSV Files

CSV means "Comma Separated Variable length". In other words: the different values, texts, on each line are separated by commas. Besides that, it's just a plain text file, that you can type in Notepad, or save in Excel (use csv as the output format).

For LCB Book Creator, the first line needs to have the 'Placeholder' names, that will be present in the Powerpoint file.

After the first line with the placeholders, you can add lines with data. The lines will be processed one at a time.

Powerpoint Templates

Powerpoint Templates for LCB Book Creator are regular Powerpoint files. You can use placeholders (like "%TITLE%") that will be replaced with text from the CSV file.

The sample file is plain, and it is not recommended to use it 'as is'. It is intended to show you how the placeholders work. You can design the Powerpoint file any way you like, and you can even use multiple slides for each row of data in the CSV file.

Whever the text for a placeholder is an existing file on your computer (e.g. "C:/Images/Books.jpg"), LCB Book Creator will replace the placeholder with the image. Otherwise, it will only replace the placeholder text with the next text.

Output Settings

To generate a Powerpoint file, you'll always need to specify where the new file must be saved (step 4).

Additionally, you can automatically generate image files in PNG, JPG and PDF format. These will be saved in a subfolder. The value in the first column of your CSV file will be used as the filename.

When you click Generate, a Powerpoint file will be created and saved to your computer, with the name and location that you selected in step 4. This may take a couple of seconds, depending on the complexity of your template, the number of placeholders and the size of the CSV file.

Whenever you use a Powerpoint file that contains macros, you'll receive a warning in Powerpoint. There are two steps to take (just once) to allow the macros to work:

Tell Windows that the file can be trusted
Tell Powerpoint that the macros can be trusted
Add the Add-In

After you double-click the Powerpoint file, Powerpoint may show a warning that Macros are disabled. In that case, you have to enabled macros to use the LCB Book Creator on your computer:

The add-in file is signed with a digital certificate owned by "Core Insights" (click Show Signature Details to verify this). You can either "Trust all from publisher" or "Enable Macros". If you decide to "Trust all from publisher", Powerpoint will never show you the security notice again for future add-ins or updates.

Once this is done, you're ready to use the add-in in Powerpoint.

Introduction

With the Time Saver for Letterbox you can combine multiple word lists, randomise word lists, and use more flexible layout settings for your Instant Puzzle Books. To use the Time Saver, you should have a basic understanding of Puzzle Maker Pro - Letterbox. The Time Saver will overwrite the grid size and the word list, all other options of Letterbox will be used as set in the Puzzle Settings.

With this Time Saver, you can select multiple word lists. Each word list will add one row to the 'job' table. You can then edit some settings for each row, and when you're done, generate all the puzzles.

To use the Time Saver, you have to click the "Use Time Saver" option, to let Puzzle Maker Pro know what you want to create. The button "Create" [8] will then change into "Create (TS)"
Set the Rows and Columns setting for your puzzles. By default it's set to 6 by 5, but you can use different sizes to change the complexity of the puzzle, or to accomodate shorter or longer words. (This value will be used in each row when you click "Select/Add Word Lists")
Set the number of puzzles or choose Unlimited to use the entire word list. (This value will be used in each row when you click "Select/Add Word Lists")
Select word lists to use for your puzzles. Each word list should be TXT file, as described in the Letterbox tutorial. You can select multiple files at once.
After selecting word lists, rows will be added to the table. You can edit the Rows, Columns, Quantity and Unlimited settings for each word list
If you selected too many files, you can delete rows from the table
Optionally you can randomize the word order for each file, to create puzzles in a different order each time you use the same word list
Create all the puzzles and optionally the Instant Puzzle Book.

Layout Options

In addition to the Time Saver automation features, the Time Saver also unlocks the advanced layout options in Puzzle Maker Pro. On the Instant Puzzle Books -> Layout tab, you can select the number of puzzles and solutions on each page.

A Letterbox puzzle consists of a grid filled with different letters. By removing all letters that occur twice or more, the resulting letters will form a word - read from top left to bottom right. The puzzle in the screenshot below is an example:

Select "Letterbox" in the Puzzle Type dropdown menu or in the Word Puzzles menu
Set the number of rows and columns for the grid (see the preview [5]), and the quantity of puzzles you want to generate
Your word list. By default, a short word list is added, but you should always use your own word list (see also the next paragraph)
"Verify" your word list - check that all the words have unique letters

Using Your Word Lists

Puzzle Maker Pro - Letterbox works with word lists or text files that have a single word or short phrase on each line. If there's also a clue or description after the word (as in: "word:clue"), the clue will not be used.

Each word must consist of unique letters only, since the aim of the puzzle is to cross off all duplicate letters. (Actually, "duplicate" is a valid word).

After you type or copy your word list, or after selecting a word list file, you can click the "Verify" button to verify all the words in the word list. It will give a warning for words that have duplicate letters.

When generating puzzles, words with duplicate letters will be skipped.

On the "Letters" tab you can find several options to control the letters that are used in your puzzle:

Even though your word list may contain spaces and other characters, like hyphens or commas, you can easily remove these from the words
"Fill Characters": After the word is placed in the grid in random positions, the other squares are filled with 'noise', random characters from the set of "Fill Characters" that you provide. By default it's set to the regular English alphabet. Letters that also occur in the hidden word, will not be used as noise.

You can get creative with the Fill Characters, e.g. use only certain letters, or use digits as noise in the puzzle, like the example below:

Select the main font by clicking the white panel that says "Arial". Here you can set the font, font color, and some other options.
If you want to use more than one font, you can set the number of fonts (up to 3). For each letter in the grid, the algorithm will randomly select one of the fonts:

You can choose to add Bold and Italics letters to the puzzle. Random letters will be Bold or Italic, if the selected font supports this.
Add more color variations: Use up to five colors or gray shades in your puzzle (see next paragraph)
Click "Next Preview" to generate a preview with the changed settings. The preview will be shown in the preview panel at the right.

You can also use multiple colors or multiple gray shades for the letters. In total you can use five different colors:

You can select a color in the font properties window. When you use three different fonts, you can select a different color for each font. These colors will be randomly assigned to each letter. (That means: If you select a red color for "Arial" and a green color for "Times New Roman", you can get four different combinations: Arial/Red, Arial/Green, Times New Roman/Red and Times New Roman/Green)
You can also add two more colors by selecting the "Color Variations" option. You can then use the two color panels to select additional colors
You can mix and match: You can select up to three different fonts and use the same color for each, you can also select "Arial" three times, but select a different color for each font.

Styling

The "Styling" tab offers several options to change the look and feel of your Letterbox puzzle, in addition to the differernt font options.

You can set the Canvas color and the Cell Background color. The "Cell" is the square in which each letter is placed. The Canvas color is only shown when padding is used [3]
You can set the width (weight) of the Cell Border and the Color. In the screenshot we have selected a red line of 20 pixels. (This may look different depending on the image size that you selected on the Output Settings tab)
Padding - You can choose to have each letter in its own square, with a little padding around it. The empty space will have the Canvas color:

Introduction

The time saver does exactly what it says on the tin: It saves you time. It does so by allowing you to batch create puzzles. You get less control over the details, but if you have your lists set up, you can create puzzles much faster than if you did it manually.

Sounds pretty nifty right? Let's switch to the Time-Saver tab, and see how it's done.

Main Options

The main options are very similar to the style panel in the normal version. You can choose the font size. Here you can select a uniform font size for every puzzle, or a variable font size. It's automatically on variable. This way, if you create multiple criss cross puzzles with different sizes, it will automatically look for the optimal font size.

You can also select "One Size Fits All", where it uses the largest possible font size that fits in every puzzle. This can create funky looks if you're using multiple very different sizes, but it also creates a more uniform look in terms of font.

Third, you can select the fixed font size. Everything will be the font size you select. If you know how big your puzzles are, and what size font you're going to need, or if you are creating books for people with sight problems, you could want this. However, keep in mind that if your math is off, this can create very strange effects.

Next, you can select the puzzle alignment. Because it's near impossible to create puzzles that fit exactly within the grid size you chose, you can choose your own alignment for the puzzles. You can choose to have them all aligned at the top, the bottom, the middle, and if you want them aligned to the left side of the page, the right side, or, again, the middle. You can also choose to align the words with the puzzle.

Word List Options

Now for the fun part: Adding word lists! Add as many or as few word lists as you want (1).

Reminder: for this software, you want the word lists to have a colon in between the word and the description. As you can see in the starting screen of the crossword module, you want your word lists formatted like this:

You can set if the word lists can be merged or not (3). If you have themed word lists and want to create themed puzzles, you probably don't want to mix them. However, if the puzzles do not have a theme, merging them can create more unique puzzles, which is good too.

You can also choose if a word can be re-used (2). Using auto or repeat, the wordlists will slowly be used, and words cannot be reused. With repeat, they can be reused.

Puzzle Control Options

Time for batch creation! This is the fun part of the time saver. You've done your prep work, now you can select how many puzzles you want, what the sizes of the puzzles are, you can load in presets, et cetera.

Simply change the quantity(1), select the size you want(2), and click "add" (3) to add them to the list of puzzles the software has to make.

If you've made presets for criss cross crosswords in the past, you can load those in too!

You can select which word lists each batch pulls from, or if it doesn't really matter and they can pull from everything here too, and you can change the amount of words that can be in each puzzle. Simply change those settings after you've added them to the list.

Then finally, you just click "Create (TS)" to generate all the puzzles! Don't forget to make sure you have "use Time Saver to generate puzzles" (located at the top of the screen) selected.

Introduction

A requirement for all Crossword style puzzle is that they have clues. It's best to vary the clues between puzzles, and not have identical clues for the same word in all the Crossword puzzles you generate. For example: If you have "Longest river in the USA" (8 letters) in each and every puzzle, that's not very exciting for your customers.

There are two main functions for word lists and clue management. First of all, with the clue editor you can edit the clues for your word lists, before or after (!) generating puzzles. Additionally, there's an option to add your own main word list or dictionary, instead of adding the clues to each theme word list separately.

Editing Clues for Puzzle Maker Pro - Crosswords

The three options to set the clues for your words are:

Edit the word list in your favorite software.
Edit the word list in Puzzle Maker Pro, after copying or selecting it in the Word List area
Edit the clues for your puzzles AFTER generating the puzzles. You'll get this option automatically if some words are missing clues.

Editing your Word List in your own software (Notepad)

The words are listed in a simple format:

In other words: Each line in the text file has a word and a clue, separated by a colon. You can easily edit this file in Notepad on Windows. It should be a standard ".txt" file, without any kind of layout or control characters. If you're using MS Word to edit the file, make sure to select "Plain Text (.txt)" as the format, when you save the file.

This way, when you add the clues, they will be part of your word list, and can be reused each time you use the word list.

Edit Word List (in Puzzle Maker Pro)

In Puzzle Maker Pro - Crosswords (also for Criss Cross) there's an option to edit the word list you've selected. This will work both when you have copied a list of words in the words area, or if you have selected a Word List file to use. Click the "Edit Word List" button to go to the Clue Editor.

Here you'll see a table with the words and the clues. Once you click a word or clue, you can edit the clue. (see the screenshot below). Click "Close" on the Clue Editor window to close and save all clues and return to the Crossword module.

Edit Clues

You can even edit the clues AFTER generating the puzzles. This is how most other crossword software works as well, but Puzzle Maker Pro will also generate your Puzzle Book in PDF or Powerpoint format after adding the clues.

If you want to edit the clues after generating the puzzles, make sure the "Edit After Create" box is checked. Alternatively, if any of the words is missing its clue, you'll see a warning like this, allowing you to edit the clues:

If you click "No", then some words in the puzzle book will have blank clues. You can always edit the PDF or Powerpoint document after it's created.

Select the file you want to edit. The file name may seem a bit cryptic, the dropdown list shows all the word / clue files for the puzzle. By selecting them one by one, you'll be able to check or edit the words for each puzzle.
The words and clues are shown, along with the position in the puzzle (V 3 means Vertical word 3). By clicking the word CROSSSUM or the empty clue field, you'll be able to edit the clue

Click "Save Clue" to save the clue to the table. Alternatively you can click the "Auto Save Changes" box, this will automatically save changes when you change to a different word or file
Select a clue from the list - these clues are taken from the main and custom dictionaries (if you have the dictionary add-on)
Add changes automatically to the custom dictionary, or "Add All" words and clues to the custom dictionary at once, for future re-use. (This requires the dictionary add-on)
Save / Close: Leave the Clue Editor Window. After this, Puzzle Maker Pro will automatically generate puzzle books for you.

Using a Dictionary Word List

The use of main and custom word lists, is available as a separate add-on: Word List Editor for Puzzle Maker Pro. Not everybody may need or want this.

Our Dictionary system allows you to set up a main dictionary that has many words the clues for the words. Additionally you can add a 'custom' dictionary, that will be used to add all the new clues you add in Puzzle Maker Pro.

The main dictionary and the custom dictionary are separate files, this allows you to use dictionaries (clues) that you download or purchase elsewhere, and still save your own custom clues separately.

Theme Word List

In the (theme) word list for your puzzles, it's allowed to include only the words and not the clues. For the dictionaries, the clues are mandatory, since the main purpose of the dictionary is to provide you with clues.

When you use the Time Saver for Crossword, you can add multiple word lists, to create a large set of themed puzzles with a single mouse-click.

Main Dictionary

The main dictionary, or main word list, can consist of millions of words with corresponding clues.

For puzzles like Criss Cross, this dictionary is used to provide you with clues for the words that are used in the puzzle. This way you don't have to add clues in your theme word lists. Of course you still can add clues to the theme word list, which will have priority over the clues in the dictionaries.

The format of the main word file is identical to the theme word list format:

The main dictionary will never be changed by Puzzle Maker Pro.

At the time of writing, we do not include dictionaries with Puzzle Maker Pro.

Custom Dictionary

The custom dictionary is used to save clues that you add while creating puzzles. You can edit the word list before creating puzzles, and add all the clues to the custom dictionary, you can also edit the puzzle clues after creating the puzzles (but before generating a puzzle book), and add the clues to the custom dictionary.

Using Multiple Languages

Like all other Puzzle Maker Pro features, you can easily use different languages with the Crossword modules. However, you should make sure that you change the main dictionary and the custom dictionary when you use word lists for other languages. Otherwise Puzzle Maker Pro may for example add English clues from the dictionaries to French words from your word list.

Workflow options

There are different ways to use word lists in Puzzle Maker Pro - Criss Cross (and future modules):

You can create Criss Cross puzzles using your own word lists, including clues. In which case there is no need to use the built-in Clue Editor. (Note: It's faster to edit clues and descriptions in Notepad or Notepad++ or any other text editor. Our Clue Editor needs to do some extra checks because it can be linked to your dictionaries).
You can create Criss Cross puzzles using your own word lists, and add clues before or after creating the puzzles. Before your puzzle book (Powerpoint or PDF) is created, there's an automatic check to verify that each word has a clue, and you'll get the option to edit the clues with the clue editor.
Optionally you can also edit the puzzle clue files in your favourite text editor, but you have to make sure that required parts, such as word positions, remain in place
If you use a dictionary, Puzzle Maker Pro will automatically retrieve missing clues from your dictionary. You can still choose to edit the clues before creating a puzzle book.

Why so many options? First of all: With professional crossword software, it's best practice to create the puzzle(s) first, and edit all the clues after that, to create the best possible puzzle and clues. We definitely wanted to support this workflow.

At the top of the Puzzle Settings you can see the Preset options. A preset is the set of ALL the settings and options for Crossword puzzles that you can see in the Puzzle Settings tab and its sub-tabs. You can save and retrieve (re-use) these settings.

Create / Next Preview - use these buttons to create puzzles. A preview will only be shown in the software, and will not be saved on your computer (unless you click Save Preview afterwards)

What to Generate

In the top area "What to Generate" you can see several options. The Quantity is the number of puzzles.

The Rows and Columns ("Cols") set the maximum size of the puzzle grid. Puzzle generation is mostly randomized, and it's possible that the puzzle is actually smaller than the grid size you set here (as in the puzzle preview (6)). It will never be larger then the size you set up.

By default the grid size is set to 20 by 20. This should fit most words, unless you're using words such as antidisestablishmentarianism. You might need a slightly bigger grid for that.

Setting up your Word List

The word list is the basis for your puzzle. The word list is basically a long list of words - at least enough to create a puzzle.

You can use word lists that you created previously, for Word Search or for other modules (or apps), or create new lists for Criss Cross. As with other word puzzles in Puzzle Maker Pro, you can either copy the words in the word list box, or select a .txt file with the words.

As you can see in the screenshot, each line consists of a word and a clue (or hint), separated by a colon. However, if you have a list of words without the clues, you can still use it to generate a puzzle.

If you don't have clues in your word list, you can click the "Edit Word List" (just below the words) to open the Clue Editor. This will allow you to add a clue for each word. Another option is to generate the puzzles, and then add the clues for the words that are used in the puzzle. This depends on your preferences. For example, if you have a list of 1000 words, and create 1 puzzle with 20 words, it might be more efficient to add clues only for the words that are used in the puzzle. (If this doesn't make sense now: Just add your word list and create your first puzzle, to test the process, and you'll understand how it works). Details about the Clue Editor can be found in the How to use the Word List Editor for Puzzle Maker Pro - Crossword.

Configuring the word settings for your puzzle

The Word Settings tab has three areas with options for your words and puzzle: Wordlist Control, Character Settings and Word Count.

Wordlist Control

When you want to create multiple puzzles from a single word list, you can control how the word list is to be used. Let's say you have a word list of 500 words, and you want to create 50 Criss Cross puzzles:

Auto: Use all the words from the word list, or stop when the puzzle quantity is reached. (In the example, this will probably create 33-34 puzzles of 15 words each, and then it will run out of words. You will not get the 50 puzzles you specified);
Repeat: Use the entire word list until 33-34 puzzles are created, then it will reset the word list and generate the remaining puzzles
Reset: This will reset the word list after each puzzle, so each puzzle will draw from the entire 500 words.

Character Settings

There's always the "remove spaces" and "remove other" options. With these it's possible to remove spaces, and reading symbols. You can always choose to unselect these options, but for the standard criss cross puzzles that you see in books, these are the settings that are most common.

You can also choose to create a criss cross puzzle without vowels, or without certain letters, by changing what is in the "remove other" tab.

Word Count

Third, there's the amount of words. By default, you get unlimited words. This means that on the grid you have created, the software will try to put as many words as it can. However, for certain puzzles you may want only a set amount of words. If you want that, you can choose the settings for that here.

Style

On the style tab you can set the font, font color, background colors and the line styling.

To change the font and font details, click on the white rectangle that shows the font name.

Note: To see font changes, you'll need to preview the solution, since the puzzle only has empty squares. It will also change the little numbers for the hints, but depending on the size of your preview screen, that may be harder to see.

Layout

The layout tab has options that control how the puzzle is printed.

The Puzzle Placement options specify how the criss cross puzzle is printed in the grid. If you specify a 20x20 grid, but the resulting puzzle is only 18 by 17 squares, you can choose to align the puzzle to the center or any of the sides. It will still be printed on a 20x20 grid, to make sure the font size is identical in each puzzle that's created.

Furthermore, this is also where you can say how your hints are displayed. If you've ever done any sort of crossword puzzle, you know that the hints are separated by horizontal and vertical hints. By default, the horizontal words have a title called "Across", but you can change this to any word. This can make the puzzle more formal or informal, but is also very important if you create puzzles for other languages.

Using a common / generic word list

Puzzle Maker Pro - Criss Cross also has some advanced options to use your own generic word list (or dictionary). These options will help you to build your own custom clue database while creating puzzles. This way you can create more interesting puzzles, and improve your workflow.
