This tutorial shows how to create Secret Word and Letter Hints crossword puzzles with Puzzle Maker Pro - Secret Word Criss Cross.

The main tutorial for Crossword Variations shows all the steps and information that applies to all the different puzzle types.

Introduction

There are many different types of Secret Word and Letter Hints Crossword puzzles. Secret Word Criss Cross is a mix of anacrostic (letter hints) and Criss Cross with two variations:

Use hints to find a secret word, or
Add additional hints to the puzzle to make it easier to find all the words.

The example below includes a secret word:

Letter Hints Options for Secret Word Criss Cross Puzzles

As mentioned in the introduction, you can use either Secret Word or Alphabet Hints (Letter Hints) for these Grid puzzles. You cannot have both at the same time.

When you use a secret word, you can set how many 'matching' letters must be available in each word, to be included in the puzzle.

Additionally, the Word Count settings (on the Settings tab) will be overruled if there are not enough words available to 'cover' the secret word. For example, if the secret word would be "kayak", the puzzle will only have words that contain the letters "K", "A" and "Y". If you also set the "Minimum Matching Letters" to 2, this would limit the choice of words even further.

How to use the Styling options for Puzzle Maker Pro - Mazes 2D

Line Style tab

Passages / Doors

The Passage / Doors settings control how large the openings between the different squares, circles or other shapes are. The maximum is 100% (completely open).

As you can see in the screenshot, changing the passages setting will create a different 'atmosphere' for the maze.

In addition to the Passage Width setting, you can also randomize the Passage Width and/or the Passage Position, resulting in a more chaotic looking maze:

Note: This setting is not used for the Small Circles mazes.

Borders / Walls

The Borders / Walls settings control the width (weight) of the lines between te squares, octagons or other shapes. The current maximum is 20% (of the square width).

As you can see in the screenshot, this setting makes the walls much more pronounced.

Additionally you can randomize the wall thickness (or width / weight). This will determine a different line width for each cell (square, octagon, circle, etc) and draw all lines around the shape with that line width, resulting in a more hand-drawn, stylish look.

Colors tab

There are five different places to set the colors for Mazes 2D:

The (Wall) Line color (Line Style tab)
The Font color for Start and End symbols (Start/End tab)
The Canvas and Cell 'Floor' color (see below)
The Solution line color (see below)

Canvas / Background Colors

The canvas and 'Floors' colors are two ways to fill the background of an image with color. The canvas is shown everywhere where there is no cell (square or other shape), the Floor color is shown for every cell.

The example below shows an extreme coloring scheme:

In this example we chose the Easy Octagons shape to illustrate the use of colors. All the purple areas are not covered by octagons, the yellow areas are octagons.

For square or oblique mazes, the canvas color will be shown when you use a mask to define the maze contours, otherwise it will not be visible.

Solution Line Style

You can customize the look and feel of the solution path (which will only be shown in the maze solutions!):

You can set the color (for puzzle books printed in grayscale you can select a contrasting gray color)
You can set the width (weight / thickness) of the path, this is a percentage of the cell width
You can choose a dashed path
You can choose a curved path (which often looks better for non-square shapes)

Start/End tab

There are several options to customize the Start and End points in Mazes 2D:

You can choose to let the outside passage / wall open. This is shown in the green circle, where the left and top edges of the square are left blank
You can set the font and font color for the Start and End letters - just click the font preview panel that says Arial to change the font and other settings
You can change the letters to be used
You can use images instead of letters.

To use images for Start and End, you can drag and drop images on the two white panels (the Start/End Image Settings), or click the panels and select an image).

The add-on "Time Saver for Word Puzzles" adds additional options for puzzle generation and Instant Puzzle Book layouts.

Just Five Words Explained

Just Five Words is our name for this puzzle, you may find it with another name in newspapers and elsewhere.

The puzzle consists of five words.
For each word, a crossword-style description is provided.
Additionally, all the letters for the five words are placed together in a list, in alphabetical order.
The goal is to find the five words, using the descriptions and the letters.
Each letter in the list can be used only once, and each letter must be used exactly once. There will be no letters left when the puzzle is solved.

Of course, with our software, you can choose to create puzzles with 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 words, but 5 seems to be the magical number here.

Just Five Words Overview

To use Just Five Words, select the puzzle type in the drop down menu, or in the regular menu.

When you select this puzzle type for the first time, a default list of words is shown, and the preview shows an image using the first word. What you see here is a good first draft of your puzzle. You can replace the list of words with your own, or select a word list (txt) file with the words.

You can customize the Just Five Words puzzles in several ways:

Word List: you can add additional text to the word list. In the example you can see "word:description", additional options can be found here: Word List Format for Word Puzzles;
Settings: Configure the puzzle options, including word list settings
Styling: Styling options are covered below;
Image: In addition to the 'standard' puzzle output, you can also create images/memes for social media or activity books. This is described in a separate tutorial: How to create Images/Memes for Word Puzzles;

Generating Just Five Words Puzzles

The total number of Just Five Words puzzles can be set ("Quantity"), but most of the time you'll want to generate puzzles for the entire word list ("Entire List"). Make sure that the total number of words in the word list is a multiple of the number of words per image. For example, with the default 5 words per image, you'll want 45 or 50 words in the word list. With only 47 words in the word list, the final puzzle would have only 2 words.

The puzzles will always be generated as a JPG/PNG image. To add a title and/or watermark (url) to the image, see How to create Images

Puzzle Settings: The number of words for each puzzle. This has a limited range because this puzzle type doesn't work well with too many words
Word List Randomisation: Randomise the order in which the words are placed in the puzzles, or the way in which different sets of words are processed. This way you can get many different puzzles from a single word list

You can set your own style for Just Five Words puzzles:

Letters

You can select how many lines of letters you want - this way you can customise the styling if you have very short words or very long words. For most 5-word puzzles, 4 will be a good layout option.

You can also choose to have the letters aligned to the top of the image, and set the percentage of space for the letters. By default this is set to 25% of the total area for the puzzle.

Using the "Use Image Settings" on the "Output Settings" tab, you can automatically add a title, description and watermark to each puzzle.

In the example we've added a description "You must use all the letters" as an instruction for the puzzle. You can change the layout, colors, fonts, and the watermark (the url at the bottom).

Extras Add-on

Diagonals look interesting, and can create a lot of new effects.

The little crosses, as the diagonals go over each other, are a nice added difficulty and look really good in the solution too.

You can also use this option with the Word Snake option.

Word Snake

Word snake is a variation on the normal zig zag word search puzzles. Usually, the words can go anywhere they want, and in whatever form they want. In word snake, they will go into a single long line. This is represented in the solution by using a continuous line for the words, and the little dotted lines in between the words. You can see that the next word will always start next to, or diagonal to, the ending of the last word. This isn't a singular looping line, so there are two words that have a beginning and an end without anything connecting to them. See if you can find those the start and end point!

Random Shapes

This is by far the most interesting and unique variation on the zig zag word search puzzles. Usually, you'd only work within a grid, where each letter is directly next to its neighbours. Not in this variation. Here, the letters are placed more or less randomly on the screen.

So how does this work? Well, if you go to style, and add a bit of "line width", you can see the boxes that the letters are contained in, and what boxes are neighbours.

This is called a Voronoi Diagram. You can look up how this works if you want to, but the more interesting part is how this works. No longer are there three (or eight, if you use diagonals) possible routes from each letter, now it can be any random number. It adds a layer of difficulty, while looking very different from the puzzles you get with other word search options.

How to Set Up Puzzles and Solutions for Easy Puzzle Books (plugin for Powerpoint)

This tutorial shows how to set up your puzzles and solutions to create a puzzle book with Easy Puzzle Books.

The screenshot shows the empty Puzzle Files window. This is what it will usually look like when you start, unless you have used a preset already.

You can click "Add Puzzles" to add puzzles, and "Add Solutions" to add solutions. Pretty easy, right?

The puzzles and solutions will be displayed in the list. Especially for the first few puzzle books, it makes sense to verify that the proper puzzles and solutions are matched.

In this screenshot you can see that a number of puzzles and solutions have been selected. Each line contains < P>: showing the puzzle file name, and < S>: showing the solution file name. When you click on each line, a message box will show you the full path for the puzzle and solution.

Note: When you use presets, you'll get a warning "File Not Found", if your list of puzzle files contains files that cannot be found. For example when you've deleted the files or moved them to a different location.

For Automatic book creation, you can skip the next two paragraphs.

You can edit the Puzzle Title, Solution Title and Number Symbol here. For Automatic book creation, these settings will be identical to the settings in Step 4. For Manual book creation, this is where you should edit the settings.

In the screenshot, the lower part of the window is greyed out. This is what it looks like when you open this window from the "Auto" tab.

For Manual Puzzle Books creation, you'll first create one or more Powerpoint slides with placeholders for the puzzles, puzzle titles, solutions and solution titles.

This will allow you to create a nice layout, changing positions, sizes, fonts, colors, etc. In the grid, you'll see (or use) names like {Puzzle Title 1}, {Solution 3}, and so on.

These codes - "Placeholders" - are needed to tell the plugin which titles and puzzles belong together. Once the copy and replace process begins, it will replace {Puzzle Title 1} with "Puzzle ##", and replace "##" with the current puzzle number.

For Easy Puzzle Books, it's not really important what these names are, as long as they not identical, and there's a number included. Therefore it's best not to change the settings.

For Mixed Puzzle Books Pro, these placeholders should be unique, to separate the different puzzle sets in your puzzle book.
